FIC Report (Benue State) – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, on Monday 13 April 2026 called for a strategic partnership with Rev. Fr. Adasu University, Makurdi, to enhance capacity building and professionalism among journalists in the state.
The Chairman of the Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, made the call on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Timothy Alabar.
Ugber congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his appointment, describing it as well-deserved and a recognition of his academic excellence, integrity, and years of meritorious service. He noted that the appointment by the Benue State Governor and Visitor to the University, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, reflects confidence in Alabar’s leadership capacity.
He commended the Vice Chancellor’s track record, particularly his performance as former Dean of the Postgraduate School, expressing optimism that the university would witness significant growth, innovation, and academic advancement under his leadership.
The NUJ Chairman emphasized the critical role of academic institutions in societal development and proposed collaboration in areas such as training, research, and knowledge exchange to improve journalistic standards in the state.
As part of efforts to strengthen the operational efficiency of its members, Ugber appealed to the university management to support the NUJ with the provision of five laptops to equip its ICT Centre, noting that this would enhance digital capacity and align journalists with global best practices.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Timothy Alabar, welcomed the NUJ delegation and commended the union for its contributions to societal development.
He assured the Council of his willingness to support its initiatives.
Alabar expressed confidence in the quality of journalists trained by the institution, stating that they are capable of performing effectively in any professional environment.
He, however, urged journalists to ensure fairness and accuracy in their reportage of the university’s activities, particularly on social media, decrying what he described as instances of unfair reporting.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between the media and academic institutions in promoting development, accountability, and informed public discourse.
