FIC Report (Imo State) – The Imo State Coordinator of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC ) , Mrs. Doris Erumwunse has described the scheme as a dedicated institution having spent over five decades contributing significantly to the nation’s growth and development.
She stated this at the 53rd anniversary celebration of the scheme at the NYSC secretariat, Imo state.
Mrs. Erumwunse noted that the scheme remains a major forum for promoting national integration, unity and development, adding that it continues to play a vital role in sustainable nation building through the deployment of graduates to different parts of the country for their one-year mandatory service in key sectors of the economy.
She further explained that corps members have continued to impact positively and meaningfully in education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, electoral services among others thereby supporting government developmental programmes across the country.
According to the state coordinator, since the establishment of NYSC Scheme on May 22, 1973, under General Yakubu Gowon’s administration, it has remained committed to the vision of its founders, noting that the willingness of corps members to serve outside their zones, embrace diverse cultures as well as participate actively in Community Development Service projects has immensely strengthened Nigeria’s unity and integration.
Going forward, Mrs. Erumwunse reaffirmed the commitment of the NYSC Scheme to keeping pace with global trends by improving skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, youth development and digital literacy through the The Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development ( SAED) programme.
The SAED project according to her has prepared youth corps members not only for national service but also for leadership roles and economic relevance in the 21st century.
Highlights of the anniversary celebration include; a drama performance showcasing the importance of the NYSC Scheme,a special presentation on NYSC at 53 and cutting of the anniversary cake.
The ceremony was well attended, including the acting Director, South East Area Office ll, represented by Mr. Macauly Tombolu, staff of NYSC and serving corps members in Imo state.
