FIC Report (Ondo State) – The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the death of two people in a communal clash involving the Oka-Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The confirmation was contained in a statement signed by CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer.
The statement reads:
“The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State, CP Wilfred Afolabi, has called for peace amidst the ongoing clashes between the youths of Oka-Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities in Iwaro.
“The CP urged all parties involved to sheath their swords, as violence and the destruction of property would only lead to stagnation and underdevelopment.
“The clash started on 12 January 2025 when youths from Oka-Odo went on a hunting expedition and were allegedly attacked by youths from Ebo. The Ebo youths reportedly mistook them for individuals from Owake, with whom they have an unresolved land dispute.
“In retaliation, Oka-Odo youths mobilised and invaded the Ebo community, leading to incidents of arson.
“The conflict resulted in casualties on both sides, leading to the deaths of two people (names and identities unknown), while the injured are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
“A police team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Operations), has been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
“The CP urged the communities to seek peaceful resolutions to their disputes to avoid further loss of lives and property. He assured residents that the police would ensure the perpetrators of violence on both sides are brought to justice.”
It is worth noting, that barely a week ago, a violent cult clash broke out in Owo, allegedly claiming four lives.
The crisis prompted the Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the town, running from 7 pm to 6 am, to prevent further violence.
The Governor also tasked security agencies with safeguarding lives and property, apprehending those responsible for the violence, and ensuring peace is fully restored in Owo.
During a visit to the scene of the violence, the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, announced the arrest of 19 suspects in connection with the incident.
