President Tinubu Lauds Okpebholo for Pioneering Health Care Excellence in Edo State

FIC Report (Edo State) – In a significant affirmation of leadership, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his efforts in revitalizing and enhancing healthcare services in Edo State.

Speaking through the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ishaq Salako, who led a team to the Edo State Government House to formalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a National Obstetrics Fistula Centre in Benin City, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare for the citizens of Edo.

Dr. Salako referenced the challenges faced in launching the Centre prior to Governor Okpebholo’s tenure, noting that while efforts stalled under the previous administration, significant progress has been made in just three months under the new leadership. “We struggled for over a year, but thanks to your administration, we’ve successfully set up a temporary facility in Benin City and secured a 24-hectare site for a permanent structure,” he stated.

He highlighted the pressing issue of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in Nigeria, which carries the highest burden globally, with approximately 12,000 new cases annually. The minister pointed out that this medical condition goes beyond health concerns, impacting social and psychological well-being, leading some sufferers to contemplate suicide. The federal government has initiated programs for free fistula management, with nearly 1,700 cases treated so far, and seeks to expand these efforts.

Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for instigating positive change in Edo State, promising continued support for the healthcare projects in the region. He emphasized the Centre’s potential to benefit not only Edo but also neighboring states, reiterating that the state government will facilitate its prompt operation.

“The hospital will open soon, and I am committed to supporting its success alongside the federal government’s decision to establish it here in Edo State,” he affirmed, highlighting the critical importance of health services for the residents.
