PRESS RELEASE
The Senate during its plenary session on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, confirmed the nominations of Eight (8) Justices of the Court of Appeal for Appointment as Honourable Justices of the Supreme court of Nigeria.
The Justices are Hon. Justice M. Lawal Garba, JCA (North-West); Hon. Justice Helen M. Ogunwumiju, JCA (South West); Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki, JCA (North-west); Hon. Justice Adamu Jauro, JCA (North-East); Hon. Justice Samuel C. Oseji, JCA (South-South); Hon. Justice Tijjani Abubakar, JCA (North-East); and Hon. Justice Emmanuel A. Agim, JCA (South-South)
The appointments were made under section 231 (2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which requires that the appointment of a person to the office of a Justice of the Supreme court of Nigeria shall be made by the President on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, subject to confirmation of such nomination by the Senate.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele while delivering the report applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for taking a bold step to further strengthen the judiciary to meet up with the challenges of the 21st century; “ being the first time ever, that the country will be having 20 Justices on the Bench of the Supreme court of Nigeria.
He further stated that the Committee is satisfied with the qualifications, experience, stability, competence, and integrity of the nominees. Consequently, the Supreme Court now comprises of 20 Justices reflecting the Federal Character principle with North-East-(4); North-West (4); North-Central (2); South-East (3); South-West (4 )and South-South (3).
