FIC Report [Edo State) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusiveness and comprehensive oral health care as it actively participated in the global celebration of World Orthodontic Health Day. Organized annually on May 15 by the World Federation of Orthodontists, the day aims to raise awareness about the importance of proper orthodontic treatment and regular dental check-ups for improved overall well-being.
In her remark, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO) and Chief Medical Director of UBTH, emphasized the hospital’s pivotal role in promoting inclusiveness in healthcare. She called on Nigerians to prioritize oral health by seeking professional dental care from qualified practitioners and to avoid unlicensed practitioners who may pose health risks.
Prof Ize-Iyamu stated that the theme, “Beyond straight Teeth,” highlights that orthodontic care extends beyond aesthetics to include function, comfort, speech, oral hygiene, and the prevention of long-term dental complications. Its impact is therefore both clinical and deeply functional in improving quality of life.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted that orthodontists are instrumental in helping individuals attain healthy, well-aligned smiles, which significantly enhance confidence and personality development. She explained that the annual event serves as an important platform to unite orthodontists, patients, and the public in advocating for proper teeth alignment and overall oral health.
The NAO president pointed out that UBTH, along with other teaching hospitals across Nigeria, is actively involved in the celebration to educate the public on how orthodontic treatment can positively impact mental health, self-esteem, and quality of life. She reiterated the hospital’s dedication to fostering an inclusive environment where all patients, regardless of background or socioeconomic status, can access quality orthodontic care.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu urged Nigerians to take proactive steps towards maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking treatment from qualified professionals, emphasizing that such efforts are vital for healthier smiles and a more confident society.
The celebration at UBTH underscores the hospital’s role as a leader in promoting inclusiveness and advancing oral health awareness in Nigeria, ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need for better health outcomes.
