The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, fsi, has commended the invaluable contributions of journalists to global peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development, as she joins the international community in commemorating the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
The Honourable Minister particularly applauded journalists covering the activities of the Ministry, describing them as indispensable partners in advancing the rights and welfare of women, children, families, and other vulnerable groups, as well as key actors in the fight against gender-based violence.
She further congratulated media professionals across the country, noting that the annual observance; instituted by the United Nations under the auspices of UNESCO; provides a critical platform to reinforce the importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in promoting human rights, national security, and inclusive development.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” the Honourable Minister emphasized that journalists remain central to building societies anchored on truth, justice, accountability, and social cohesion. She reaffirmed that the Ministry’s programmes and interventions are deliberately aligned with this vision, particularly in strengthening family systems, promoting inclusion, and expanding access to social protection.
The Minister underscored that these efforts are firmly situated within the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which prioritizes people-centred development, social investment, and the protection of the most vulnerable. She noted that a vibrant and responsible media is essential to driving transparency, citizen engagement, and national development outcomes envisioned under the Agenda.
She further highlighted that the declaration of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development represents both a national call to action and a strategic accelerator. According to her, it reinforces the Ministry’s mandate in delivering targeted social impact programmes, strengthening institutional frameworks, and fostering multi-sectoral partnerships in line with the Renewed Hope vision.
The Honourable Minister noted that the media serves as a critical bridge between government and citizens, while also acting as a powerful voice for the voiceless; amplifying issues of social justice, equity, and national importance.
She therefore urged journalists to remain steadfast in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical reporting, encouraging them to continue shaping narratives that promote peace, unity, accountability, and national progress.
The Honourable Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining a productive partnership with the media in advancing the shared goal of building a just, inclusive, and prosperous society where no one is left behind.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3 to promote the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of media independence, and honour journalists who continue to serve, often under challenging circumstances.
