Edo Government Moves Swiftly to Contain Diphtheria Outbreak

……………Deploys Vaccines, Intensifies Surveillance, Partners Stakeholders.

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Government has launched an aggressive public health response to contain a reported outbreak of diphtheria in parts of the state.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Governor is personally overseeing surveillance and monitoring activities in coordination with the State Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders to curb the spread of the disease.

“As part of our immediate intervention, we have commenced the procurement and deployment of life-saving vaccines for a state-wide vaccination campaign, with a strong focus on children and other vulnerable groups,” the release noted.

To enhance public awareness, the government has also launched a media and grassroots campaign across radio, television, community outreach programs, and social media platforms. These campaigns aim to educate the public on the symptoms of diphtheria, preventive measures, and the importance of early medical intervention.

Hospitals have been placed on high alert, with directives to intensify case detection, isolation, and clinical management in line with national and international health standards. Medical personnel are receiving additional support and briefings to ensure swift and effective response.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the Commissioner for Health, is reportedly leading the operational end of the emergency response. He has been working with the state’s emergency health task force to contain the disease while providing regular updates to the public.

The government also disclosed that it is working closely with school proprietors to implement health screenings and reinforce hygiene practices in schools—recognizing the heightened risk to children.

To strengthen the containment strategy, Governor Okpebholo has convened a high-level emergency meeting involving the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO), traditional rulers, faith leaders, civil society groups, and community-based organizations.

While urging calm among residents, the Governor reassured the public that the situation is under control. He advised residents to report symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, or difficulty in breathing to the nearest medical facility.

“The Government assures citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further spread. We call on everyone to cooperate fully with health officials and actively participate in the vaccination and public sensitization efforts,” the release stated.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the people of Edo State.
