Benue Assembly Passes Anti-Corruption Law, Condemns Killing Of Security Personnel In Katsina-Ala

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State House of Assembly, on Monday, 22nd September 2025, passed into law the Benue State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission Bill. The announcement was made by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alfred Berger Emberga, during plenary.

The law, which was considered clause by clause at the Committee of the Whole, seeks to tackle corruption at both state and national levels. Its passage follows a recent public hearing at the Assembly Complex where critical stakeholders provided insights and feedback.

With this development, Benue State joins other states taking bold steps in the war against corruption. The law is expected to regulate public and private life while enhancing transparency and accountability.

During the same plenary, the House also entertained a Motion of Urgent Public Importance sponsored by Rt. Hon. Jonathan Agbidye (Katsina-Ala East State Constituency), condemning the killing of security personnel at Agu Center in Mbatyula/Mberev Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area by suspected armed herdsmen.

The House noted with deep concern the recurring attacks in Katsina-Ala, which have led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of communities. It recalled the August 10th, 2025 attack on Saint Paul’s Parish, Aye-Twar, where church facilities were destroyed, forcing residents to flee.

Particularly disturbing was the September 19th, 2025 ambush by armed militia, which left several security personnel dead and others abducted during a joint clearance operation.

After deliberations, the House resolved as follows:

  1. Strongly condemn the killing of the security personnel in the community.
  2. Commiserate with the security agencies and families of the deceased officers.
  3. Commend the Benue State Government’s ongoing efforts, especially the deployment of a joint military operation.
  4. Restate its call on the State Government to establish a formidable security post in the affected community and ensure adequate deployment of security personnel.
  5. Urge the State Government to complete the construction of the Gbishe–Mbakyer–Agu Center road to enhance movement for residents and security operatives.

The House emphasized that urgent action is needed to restore peace and protect defenceless citizens in Katsina-Ala and across Benue State.
