NAPPS Calls for Urgent Education Reforms in Benue

FIC Report (Benue State) – The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Benue State Chapter, has called for urgent reforms and a comprehensive review of the legal and administrative framework guiding education administration in the state.

The association made the call on Thursday 29th January,2026,during a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) House in Makurdi.

Speaking on behalf of NAPPS, the Chairman, Mr. Sunday Adaujo, reaffirmed the association’s readiness to partner with the Benue State Government to improve the quality of education and secure the future of children in the state.

Mr. Adaujo condemned the alleged illegal collection of a N30,000 recertification fee and other multiple levies, including the proposed e-dozier fee, insisting that such charges have no legal backing. He demanded the immediate refund of monies already paid and called for the abolition of all illegal levies.

He stressed that all legitimate taxes should only be paid through the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS).
The association also criticized the practice of linking examination registration to tax compliance, warning that it unfairly punishes learners and undermines their right to education.

NAPPS further expressed concern over what it described as administrative inefficiencies, alleged unprofessional conduct, and poor examination scheduling by the state examination board.

The group raised alarm over unresolved conflicts between the Ministry of Education and the Benue State Education Quality Assurance and Examination Board, noting that the situation has resulted in regulatory confusion, double payments, and undue financial burdens on private school operators.

The association called for urgent reforms, a review of existing education laws, and the convening of a Benue State Education Summit to bring together government officials, regulators, private school owners, and other stakeholders to address the challenges confronting the sector.

NAPPS warned that failure to resolve the issues could lead to legal action and a possible shutdown of private schools across the state.

Despite its concerns, the association commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for what it described as purposeful leadership, particularly the consistent payment of salaries, pensions, and arrears to workers and retirees, as well as the employment of thousands of qualified teachers in public primary schools across the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, commended the association for presenting its concerns through the media and assured that journalists would give the event wide publicity.
