Customs Intercepts N1.05bn Illicit Drugs In Zone ‘C’, Seizes Over 1 Million Tramadol Tablets, Codeine Syrup

FIC Report (Imo State) – The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘C’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Owerri, has recorded a major breakthrough in its anti-smuggling operations with the interception of a large consignment of illicit drugs valued at over ₦1.05 billion.

The Comptroller of the Unit, Mr. Bishir Balogun, disclosed that the seizure was made along the Okada/Ofosu Expressway in Benin City, Edo State, following credible intelligence and coordinated enforcement by operatives of the Service.

He stated that the intercepted consignment comprised 1,025,000 tablets of Tramadol and 10,000 bottles of Barcadin Codeine Syrup (100ml each), which were concealed among legitimate goods in a truck in an attempt to evade detection.

According to him, the driver of the vehicle attempted to evade arrest upon interception but abandoned the truck and fled into a nearby bush.

Mr. Balogun noted that the seized items have a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦1.05 billion, describing the operation as a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against the trafficking of prohibited and controlled substances.

He emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in combating the smuggling of illicit drugs, which pose serious threats to public health and contribute to criminal activities across the country.

The Comptroller further warned smugglers and criminal networks to desist from illegal activities, stressing that the Service will continue to deploy intelligence-driven strategies to safeguard national security.

He added that the seized consignment is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
