FIC Report (Ondo State) – Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday commissioned the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project in Akure, describing the project as a strategic intervention aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving road safety, and stimulating industrial and commercial growth along the corridor.
The commissioning ceremony, held along the Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, was attended by Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, alongside other government officials, traditional rulers, and security chiefs.
Speaking at the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the flyover as the first ever constructed in Akure, noting that the project represents a major step towards addressing long-standing traffic challenges and improving economic productivity within the state capital.
The governor explained that the Onyearugbulem–Shagari and Akure–Benin Expressway intersection had for years experienced severe traffic gridlock and frequent accidents, leading to disruptions in economic activities along the major South-West transport corridor.
He stated that the project was initiated during the administration of the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and sustained by his administration to ensure its completion.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also announced that the flyover has been named after Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti in honour of his 100th birthday celebration.
The governor highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across Ondo State, including the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, Akungba–Ikare Road, Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road, and College Road in Igbokoda, as well as the rehabilitation of over 100 kilometres of roads across the three senatorial districts.
He commended the contractors, engineers, consultants, and workers involved in the project, noting that the flyover was delivered largely by indigenous professionals. He also appreciated residents of Akure for their patience and cooperation during the construction period.
