FIC Report (Benue State) – The Federal Government has reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between government institutions, security agencies and local communities in addressing security challenges and promoting national stability.
This was highlighted on Monday, 11th May 2026, during the visit of the 2026 Nigerian Study Tour Team from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College to Government House, Makurdi, as part of its nationwide strategic study tour.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Governor of Benue State, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode, described the exercise as a vital national initiative aimed at deepening security consciousness, strengthening policy dialogue and encouraging participatory governance across the country.
Speaking on the study theme, “Promoting Community Engagement for Enhanced National Security and Prosperity,” Dr. Ode stated that modern security threats require collective responsibility and stronger cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, traditional institutions, religious bodies, civil society organisations and citizens.
He noted that the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia remains committed to promoting peacebuilding, rural development, youth empowerment and strategic collaboration with security agencies to enhance safety and public confidence in the state.
The deputy governor commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security personnel for their sacrifices and patriotism in safeguarding lives and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity despite prevailing security challenges.
While acknowledging existing security concerns in parts of the state, Dr. Ode assured the delegation that the government, in partnership with the military and other stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to strengthen security architecture and sustain peace in affected communities.
He expressed confidence that the outcome of the study tour would contribute meaningfully to national discourse on conflict resolution, intelligence gathering and effective security management.
Dr. Ode also encouraged members of the delegation to explore the state’s agricultural potential, resilient population and investment opportunities, describing Benue as a critical contributor to Nigeria’s food security and economic development.
Earlier, the Team Coordinator of the 2026 Nigerian Study Tour Team Benue and Chief Instructor, Echo Division, Department of Maritime Warfare, Navy Captain Aliu Usman, said the delegation was in the state to conduct environmental and security assessments as part of the academic programme of the college.
Representing the Team Leader, Brigadier General Mohammed Abdullahi, Navy Captain Usman conveyed the appreciation of the college commandant to the Benue State Government for its continued support and hospitality during such national exercises.
He explained that the Armed Forces Command and Staff College is a tri-service institution responsible for training operational-level officers of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as personnel from ministries, departments, agencies and allied African countries.
According to him, the delegation comprised 61 officers, including Majors, Lieutenant Commanders and Squadron Leaders drawn from the three armed services, alongside participants from South Africa and Zimbabwe, reflecting the institution’s international outlook and regional cooperation.
Navy Captain Usman further disclosed that study teams had been deployed to several states across the federation, including Katsina State, Kogi State, Niger State, Nasarawa State, Plateau State, Jigawa State and Benue State.
He noted that Benue was selected because of its strategic importance to national food security and its relevance to peace and national prosperity.
The coordinator added that participants would engage traditional rulers, community leaders, government institutions and heads of security agencies to assess the role of community participation in enhancing security and sustainable development.
He explained that findings from the exercise would be compiled into a report for presentation to the college community and relevant authorities to support ongoing national security efforts.
In a vote of thanks, Wing Commander M.I. Owomuku, a participant of Senior Course 48 and member of Team Benue, appreciated the Benue State Government for the warm reception and valuable insights shared on national security, leadership, civil-military relations and sustainable development.
