FIC Report (Kwara State) – Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday morning staged a protest at the entrance of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) in Ilorin over what they described as anti-worker policies introduced by the Managing Director of the agency, Olushola George Olumoroti.
The protesting workers, under the Nigeria Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees (NUAAE), also accused the management of financial mismanagement within the organisation.
Carrying placards with different messages, the workers called for the immediate removal of the Managing Director, insisting that he lacked the capacity to continue leading the authority. Some of the placards condemned alleged corruption, victimisation of staff, and disregard for labour laws and due process within the establishment.
The protest, themed around opposition to the Managing Director’s alleged anti-labour actions against NUAAE members, led to a complete shutdown of the authority’s entrance and exit gates, preventing movement in and out of the premises. The demonstration was led by the Kwara State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Muritala Saheed Olayinka.
Speaking during the protest, Olayinka criticised the management for allegedly undermining workers’ welfare and rights.
Also addressing the protesters, the Chairperson of the NLC Women Committee in the state, Comrade Victoria Agboola, accused the management of victimising employees and demoting union leaders who opposed certain policies. She warned that allowing such practices to continue could negatively affect the future of the authority.
