FIC Report (Ebonyi State) – In a renewed effort to curb the spread of new HIV infections, Ebonyi State has commenced the rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN PrEP), a long-acting injectable medication for the prevention of the virus which is administered twice yearly.
The State Commissioner for Health, Moses Ekuma, officially flagged off the landmark innovation in HIV prevention at General Hospital Ezzangbo. Ohaukwu local Government Area.
Ekuma said the introduction of the six-month injectable offers a more convenient and effective alternative to the daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), particularly for young people and vulnerable populations often affected by poor adherence and social stigma.
He noted that while Lenacapavir represents a major advancement in HIV prevention, it remains part of a broader strategy that includes regular testing, condom use, behavioural counselling and access to treatment services.
The commissioner expressed appreciation to Ali Pate and the National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) for selecting Ebonyi as one of the eight pilot states for the nationwide rollout, describing the move as a reflection of the state’s commitment to adopting evidence-based healthcare innovations.
Ekuma further applauded Francis Nwifuru and Mary-Maudline Nwifuru for what he described as significant investments in strengthening the health sector.
The State AIDS Programme Coordinator, Clement Ogodo, disclosed that the injection is currently available in eight health facilities across the state, including AE-FUTHA, OSS Abakaliki, General Hospital Ezzangbo, General Hospital Onueke, EBSU Community Hospital, Police Command Clinic, ROMEC Afikpo and Mile 4 Hospital, Abakaliki.
He assured residents that public sensitisation campaigns would be intensified to encourage uptake of the new 1intervention, especially among persons considered to be at substantial risk of HIV infection.
Residents and health stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major breakthrough and game changer expected to reduce HIV infections, improve treatment adherence, tackle stigma, and strengthen healthcare delivery statewide
