Nigerian Navy Ehances Security Operations In Imo With New Facilities, Operational Assets

FIC Report (Imo State) – The Nigerian Navy has reinforced its operational capacity in Imo State with the commissioning of critical infrastructure and security assets at the Naval Base, Oguta, as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th Anniversary celebration.

The newly commissioned projects include a renovated 12-room accommodation block for naval ratings, four refurbished Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), and a 25-kilowatt solar power system aimed at improving operational efficiency, personnel welfare, and security service delivery within the area.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the member representing Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Eugene Dibiagwu, commended the Nigerian Navy for its sustained contributions to peace and security in the area.

He noted that the establishment of the Naval Base in Oguta has significantly enhanced security, curtailed maritime-related crimes, and promoted stability within the locality. Dibiagwu also applauded the leadership of the base for fostering cordial relations with host communities and sustaining effective security operations.

In his remarks, the Commander, Naval Base Oguta, Commodore Sabo Tanko Lengaya, stated that the projects were designed to strengthen operational readiness, improve troop welfare, and enhance the overall security architecture of the area.

According to him, the upgraded facilities demonstrate the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of responding effectively to emerging security challenges.

Commodore Lengaya explained that the renovated accommodation block would provide improved living conditions for personnel, noting that quality accommodation remains essential for morale, productivity, and operational effectiveness.

He further disclosed that the installation of the solar power system would ensure reliable electricity supply for critical operations, communication systems, and medical services at the base, while reducing dependence on generators and lowering operational costs.

The Commander also highlighted the importance of the refurbished Armoured Personnel Carriers, stating that they would improve troop mobility, protection, and rapid response capabilities, thereby strengthening security operations in Oguta and neighbouring communities.

He noted that the projects align with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, and reflect the Navy’s commitment to personnel welfare and operational excellence.

Commodore Lengaya expressed appreciation to the Naval High Command, the Central Naval Command, the Imo State Government, and other stakeholders for their support towards the successful completion of the projects.

Assuring residents of continued collaboration, he stated that a secure and well-equipped naval base would contribute significantly to economic activities, fishing, transportation, and overall community development.

The event also featured the presentation of plaques to six outgoing National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who successfully completed their service year at the Naval Base.

The commissioning of the projects forms part of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to strengthen national security, improve operational effectiveness, and promote the welfare of personnel while fostering stronger civil-military relations in host communities.
