FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, joined top dignitaries Wednesday to mark the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary, praising the force for 7 decades of securing Nigeria’s waters and boosting coastal economic growth.

The event held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos brought together government officials, military leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on the Navy’s role since its establishment in 1956.

Speaking through her representative, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board Mrs. Bukola Agbaminoja, Commissioner Benson-Awoyinka commended the Navy’s “professionalism, resilience, and dedication to duty.”

She said the Navy’s operations have gone beyond defence, directly supporting commerce and tourism along Nigeria’s coastline.

“Her contributions have significantly enhanced economic growth and supported the development of tourism activities along Nigeria’s coastal communities,” Agbaminoja stated on behalf of the Commissioner.

According to her, the Navy’s work in safeguarding territorial waters, protecting maritime trade routes, and combating maritime crimes has created “an enabling environment for commerce, investment, and tourism to thrive.”

The anniversary celebrated 70 years of what the Commissioner called “unwavering commitment” to national security.

“For 70 years, the Nigerian Navy has remained a pillar of national security and maritime stability. Its sacrifices, courage, and commitment have not only protected our waters but have also contributed immensely to economic development and the growth of tourism along our coastlines. We celebrate this remarkable milestone and salute the officers and men of the Navy for their dedicated service to our nation,” she said.

Organizers said the celebration was also a moment to review the Navy’s milestones and strategic contributions since 1956, while reaffirming its mandate to protect Nigeria’s maritime interests for future generations

The Nigerian Navy, established 70 years ago, remains central to securing Africa’s largest economy against piracy, illegal fishing, oil theft, and other maritime threats.
