FIC Report (Ekiti State) – The Nigeria Police Force has assured residents of Ekiti State of adequate security for election materials and personnel ahead of Saturday’s June 20, 2026 governorship election, with special measures deployed to identify flashpoint Local Government Areas.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Shogunle, gave the assurance on Wednesday while monitoring the movement and distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office in Ado-Ekiti to the 16 Local Government Areas, LGAs.
CP Shogunle said the process is being coordinated by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Ekiti State, with representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, and the media present to ensure transparency.
He explained that materials are being sorted and distributed to each of the 16 LGAs, beginning with Ado-Ekiti.
“Police officers have been deployed to escort the materials from the state office to LGA headquarters, where they will be domiciled under guard.
“From the LGAs, the materials will move to Registration Area Centres, RACs, tomorrow, and then to polling units on Saturday morning. We are putting plans in place to ensure they arrive safely at all designated polling units across the state early enough to enable the commencement of voting at the stipulated time,” CP Shogunle said.
On security concerns in areas such as Ilejemeje LGA, the CP said the operational order approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Babatunde Disu is based on a multi-layered security framework.
“We have considered intelligence reports and risk assessments by stakeholders. Adequate measures have been put in place for areas you mentioned and other areas I will not mention. The framework is multi-layered so that if one layer is breached, another will hold,” he said.
He added that security agencies are working to ensure the election is conducted freely, peacefully, and without violent incidents.
Dr. Bunmi Omosehindemi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State also confirmed that the distribution process is going smoothly.
He urged residents to come out and vote en masse for candidates of their choice in a peaceful atmosphere.
“Ekiti has been peaceful, and we promise residents free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections,” the REC said.
