FIC REPORT (EKITI STATE) – As Nigerians await September 14 deadline for the submission of draft for National Policing Bill, proposed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stakeholders in Ekiti State have described the State Policing as a remedy to the increased insecurity in the country.
This was the position of scholars, Security Agencies, Religious Leaders, and stakeholders at a 1- Day Summit on State Policing debate in Nigeria held in Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti.
The summit was necessitated by the call for the state police as a measure to survey increasing Insecurity challenges in the country organised by the Political Science Department, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Babatola Ayodele described the theme as relevant and topical to the climate change of security in Nigeria, describing the modality to ensure the operational effectiveness of State Police in Nigeria.
Prof. Ola Abegunde, the convener of the programme and Head of the Political Science Department in his welcome address, expressed the hope that all deliberations would move beyond political rhetoric and debate to rigorous policy analysis and implementations, forming panacea to State Policing for stronger security network in the nation.
The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti, Most Reverend Femi Ajakaye, noted that state police would succeed through inter-governmental support and community cooperation devoid of political interference.
Keynote speakers at the event included Dean, Faculty of Law, Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Prof. Benard Jemilohun, Retired Asst. Inspector General of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin represented by Mr. Amodu, and Prof. Toye Abe who all acknowledged the importance of State Police in Nigeria.
