FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking through sustained public awareness campaigns, preventive interventions, and community-driven initiatives aimed at fostering a healthier and safer society.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday 22nd June 2026 in Benin City, Chairperson of the Edo State Drug Control Committee and Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, said the state government remains resolute in promoting drug abuse prevention, supporting rehabilitation programmes, and strengthening efforts to curb the spread of illicit drugs across communities.
Mrs. Anani noted that the theme for this year’s observance, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses,” highlights the need for collaborative action among governments, institutions, stakeholders, and communities in addressing the growing challenges posed by substance abuse and drug-related crimes.
According to her, factors such as poverty, unemployment, poor access to education, and social inequality continue to fuel drug abuse and trafficking, underscoring the need for comprehensive strategies that combine prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and social support.
She expressed concern over the increasing emergence of new psychoactive substances and stressed the importance of adopting innovative approaches that integrate law enforcement, public education, awareness creation, and community participation.
The committee chairperson called on parents, teachers, healthcare professionals, community leaders, civil society organisations, and residents to play active roles in promoting healthy lifestyles and protecting young people from substance abuse.
Mrs. Anani disclosed that the state has lined up a series of activities to mark the campaign, including school sensitisation programmes, public enlightenment drives, and community outreach initiatives designed to educate residents on the dangers of drug abuse and empower them to make informed choices.
Also speaking, Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, Mitchell Ofoyeju, described substance abuse as a major public health concern with far-reaching social and economic consequences. He emphasized the need for continuous awareness campaigns and behavioural change programmes to reduce the demand for illicit substances.
Ofoyeju further noted that emerging drug threats, including the growing abuse of shisha and other psychoactive substances, require innovative and technology-driven responses from relevant stakeholders.
The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Cyril Oshiomhole, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening mental health services, expanding rehabilitation programmes, and implementing evidence-based interventions to address substance abuse and improve public health outcomes.
The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking while mobilising collective action towards building safer, healthier, and drug-free communities across Edo State.
