FIC Report (Anambra State) – The Federal Government has collaborated with the International Fund For Agricultural Development (IFAD) Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) to intensify efforts to promote improved nutrition and healthy food consumption among rural farming households in Anambra State.
The State Programme Coordinator Anambra VCDP, Dr Deborah Onyefuru in her address during a training in Awka, disclosed that the initiative was aimed at addressing malnutrition in the rural communities.
Dr Onyefuru who was represented by the Rural Institutions, Gender and Youth Mainstreaming Officer, Mr Ikechukwu Anyasie said that the training which focused on how to prepare nutritious meals using locally available crops such as casava, rice and cowpea was targeted only for women and youths and the goal was to encourage households adopt balanced diets.
She revealed that participants were also trained on food processing, hygienic food preparation and the use of nutrient-rich agricultural products in preparing healthy meals.
She further said that the programme also supports women’s groups and cooperatives with modern agro-processing equipment and capacity-building to enhance value addition and improve income generation.
Furthermore, the VCDP State Nutrition Officer, Mrs Chinwe Ekwelie noted that integrating nutrition education into rural communities in Anambra remained vital to improving household nutrition outcomes, adding that sustained awareness and practical training would help families make better food choices and improve their overall quality of life.
