The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to supporting innovative solutions capable of transforming Nigeria’s growing waste challenge into an opportunity for clean energy, economic value and sustainable development.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST), Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad, mni, stated this when he received a delegation from Biogas Unite Nigeria Limited, led by its Head of Operations, Miss Okuwadamilola Oni, at his office in Abuja.
Dr. Yawale described the presentation as a welcome development, noting that innovations in renewable energy, particularly those that provide practical solutions to environmental and energy challenges, are important to Nigeria’s sustainable development aspirations.
He stressed that the Ministry remains committed to encouraging the development, promotion and deployment of indigenous science, technology and innovation solutions capable of addressing national challenges.
According to him, biogas technology represents an important area of innovation with the potential to contribute to cleaner energy generation, effective waste management, environmental protection and economic development when properly developed and deployed.
The Permanent Secretary further emphasised the importance of strengthening collaboration between government institutions, research organisations, innovators and the private sector to ensure that promising technologies are not only developed but are successfully translated into practical solutions that benefit communities and the wider economy.
Dr. Muhammad encouraged the company to continue refining its technology and to explore opportunities for collaboration with relevant departments and agencies of the Ministry, particularly in areas of research and development, technology validation, capacity building, technology transfer and commercialisation.
He also highlighted the need for innovators to demonstrate the technical viability, safety, scalability, environmental benefits and economic sustainability of their solutions, stressing that evidence-based innovation would strengthen the prospects for wider adoption and investment, assuring the delegation that the Ministry would continue to provide an enabling platform for constructive engagement with the private sector and other stakeholders whose innovations align with Nigeria’s development priorities.
Earlier, the Head of Operations of Biogas Unite Nigeria Limited, Miss Okuwadamilola Oni, presented the organisation’s activities and its interest in advancing biogas solutions in Nigeria.
She explained the organisation’s vision of contributing to cleaner energy generation through the conversion of organic waste into useful energy, while also addressing some of the environmental challenges associated with improper waste disposal.
Oni expressed gratitude to the Permanent Secretary for granting the delegation the opportunity to present its initiative and engage with the Ministry on possible areas of collaboration.
