Governor Alia Joins Iorpuu in Thanksgiving, Calls for United Efforts Against Insecurity in Benue

FIC Report (Benue State) – Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, joined the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, PhD, in a thanksgiving service to celebrate his numerous achievements.

The thanksgiving Mass took place on Friday, February 28, 2025, at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Chichii-Gbatse, in Vandeikya Local Government Area. The event marked Sir James Iorpuu’s recent milestone of earning a PhD from Benue State University, Makurdi, and his elevation to Permanent Secretary in the Benue State Civil Service.

Speaking at the event, Governor Alia expressed gratitude for Iorpuu’s contributions to his administration, noting that his role in emergency response has been vital to the government’s operations. He acknowledged the continued support of groups like Divine Mandate and pledged to remain committed to the well-being of the people of Benue.

Governor Alia emphasized the pressing security challenges in Benue and called on traditional rulers, youth, and community leaders to collaborate with the government by providing valuable intelligence to combat insecurity.

“I appeal to the Tor Tiv and other traditional rulers to support our efforts. Information is key—if you see something, say something,” the Governor urged.

He also reiterated his stance against unauthorized mining activities in the state, particularly in Kwande Local Government Area, where rich mineral resources such as gold and lithium have been discovered. He cautioned that only those with proper authorization from the federal government should engage in mining.

Acknowledging that security remains a major challenge, Governor Alia reassured the people that his administration is actively working to restore peace.

“As a leader, the responsibility falls on me, but I want you to know that we are taking action,” he assured.

The Tor Tiv, HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, called on the Governor to intensify efforts in protecting the Tiv people from rising security threats. Similarly, Most Rev’d Isaac Dugu, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala, praised the administration’s developmental strides but raised concerns over the increasing herdsmen attacks in Benue communities, urging urgent intervention.

In his remarks, Sir James Iorpuu expressed deep appreciation for Governor Alia, whom he has known for 40 years, crediting him for positively influencing his life and strengthening his faith.

He thanked God for the many blessings he has received and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Benue.
