The House of Representatives at its plenary today Tuesday, February 25, 2020 sought for the need to boost Ginger Production and Exportation in Nigeria.
Hon. Salek Zock, the mover of the motion said exports are crucial component of a Country‘s Economy as they facilitate International Trade and stimulate Domestic Economic activities by creating production, revenue and employment opportunities for the Masses.
He said although Europe does not produce Ginger, it is the highest importer of ginger in the World. Noting that, in 2017, 70% of their total imports were from developing Countries.
According to Hon. Saleh, Ginger is heavily produced in Kachia, Kagarko, Jaba, and Zango-kataf Local Government areas of Kaduna State. Thus, accounting for more than 80% of the total ginger produced in the Country and it’s the finest in the World.
Furthermore, he noted that ginger is found in a wide range of application like; culinary, alcohol, beverages as well as medicine which makes it indispensable.
The House therefore urged Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to set aside Special Fund for Ginger farming, production and processing and also call on Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to immediately designate ginger as a priority crop and give it necessary attention.
