The Honourable Minister gave the assurance when he received in audience, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Nigeria, His Excellency Mohammed Abdelaal Haroun, on Friday, 3 July 2026.

During the meeting, Ambassador Enikanolaiye underscored the longstanding historical and strategic relations between Nigeria and the Sudan, describing the enduring friendship between both countries as one built on shared history, strong people-to-people ties, and mutual respect, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

The Sudanese Ambassador, in his response, congratulated the Honourable Minister on his appointment and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded him. He highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and social links between both countries, particularly the longstanding presence of a large Nigerian community in the Sudan, which he described as an important pillar of bilateral relations. The Ambassador briefed the Honourable Minister on the current political and security situation in the Sudan and outlined his government’s ongoing efforts to restore peace through various regional and international initiatives, including the Jeddah peace process and other diplomatic engagements. He appealed for Nigeria’s continued support in promoting peace and stability in the Sudan and sought Nigeria’s assistance towards the country’s reintegration into the African Union.

Responding, Ambassador Enikanolaiye stressed that Nigeria remained firmly committed to supporting an inclusive, Sudanese-led peace process capable of preserving the country’s unity and facilitating sustainable peace. He emphasised the importance of broad-based national dialogue involving all relevant stakeholders and noted that a credible political roadmap remained essential for achieving lasting stability and democratic transition.

The Honourable Minister further assured the Sudanese Ambassador that he would brief President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the discussions and make appropriate recommendations on how Nigeria could further contribute to ongoing regional and international efforts to support peace in the Sudan. He also welcomed the appointment of Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Sudan, expressing confidence that the Mission would play a constructive role in promoting dialogue and strengthening bilateral relations.
