FIC Report (LAGOS STATE) — NIMASA and the National Hydrographic Agency have pledged to deepen collaboration to increase the use of locally produced nautical charts and hydrographic tools, aiming to improve maritime safety and navigation in Nigerian waters.
The commitment was made on May 17, 2026, during a working visit by the Hydrographer of the Nation, Rear Admiral Olumide Fadahunsi, to NIMASA management in Lagos.
Rear Admiral Fadahunsi commended NIMASA’s ongoing work on maritime safety and development, and said the agency can count on continued support for hydrographic services. He noted that wider adoption of locally generated hydrographic data would strengthen navigational safety, boost maritime security, and support better management of Nigeria’s territorial waters.
“Hydrography remains a critical component of maritime safety and national development,” he said. “Strengthening collaboration between the National Hydrographic Agency and NIMASA will enhance navigational safety, improve maritime security, and support sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime domain.”
NIMASA’s Next Steps
NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola said the agency is upgrading its Maritime Safety Information infrastructure, refining enforcement strategies, and expanding capacity building to advance hydrographic services.
He stressed that partnership with the National Hydrographic Agency is key to achieving those goals.
“At NIMASA, we recognize that effective collaboration among maritime institutions is essential to achieving safer and more efficient waterways,” Mobereola said. “We remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen maritime safety, improve operational standards, and enhance the overall growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector.”
The joint effort is expected to reinforce NIMASA’s mandate under the NIMASA Act to ensure safety of navigation and shipping, particularly through the deployment and enforcement ofv accurate, up-to-date navigational charts for commercial and coastal operations.
