FIC Report (Delta State) – The Hon. Commissioner for Works (High Ways and Urban Roads), Hon. Reuben Izeze has assured Deltans that the present administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will not commission any substandard road in the State, stressing that newly constructed roads are expected to last at least 20 years before such roads should be due for rehabilitation.
The Commissioner stated this while featuring at the 12th edition of ‘Parley to Party’ a weekly programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council.
According to the Works Commissioner (High Ways and Urban Roads), Hon. Izeze, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s focus is to ensure that all roads constructed by the administration are done according to specifications and standards to ensure that such roads last at least 20 years before any rehabilitation will be carried out.
He called on contractors handling projects in the State to adhere strictly to job specifications, stressing that certificate for payment can only be given for jobs executed in line with job specifications.
Hon. Izeze further stressed that it is no longer business as usual where roads constructed in the State do not last more than one year before it starts failing.
The High Ways and Urban Roads Commissioner also cautioned Engineers in the Ministry of Works not to compromise standards by supervising substandard projects.
The Commissioner also called on communities where projects are located to be involved in monitoring the projects to ensure that the jobs were done according to specifications.
Earlier, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe said the initiative for the ‘Parley to Party’ was conceived to create a platform for interaction between the media, public office holders and other stakeholders to enlighten the public on government activities and programmes.
