FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigerians to remain united, vigilant, and committed to strengthening democratic institutions as the country continues to grapple with insecurity, economic difficulties, and challenges to public trust.
In his Democracy Day message, the governor described June 12 as more than a date of remembrance, saying it should inspire both citizens and leaders to protect and deepen Nigeria’s democratic gains.
Reflecting on the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election and the sacrifices of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other pro-democracy activists, Okpebholo said the lessons of that struggle remain relevant as the nation confronts contemporary issues.
“June 12 reminds us that democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey. The sacrifices of our democratic heroes secured our freedom to choose our leaders, but the responsibility of protecting and strengthening our institutions rests on all of us,” he stated.
The governor identified insecurity—including kidnapping, cult-related violence, and armed robbery—as one of the biggest obstacles to national development, stressing that no democracy can flourish when citizens live in fear.
“Democracy means little to a family that cannot sleep peacefully at night or to a community living under the threat of criminal elements. Security, justice, and the protection of lives and property are essential dividends of democracy,” he said.
Okpebholo noted that his administration has stepped up efforts to tackle insecurity in Edo State through stronger collaboration with security agencies, improved community-based intelligence gathering, strategic deployment of security resources, and sustained operations against kidnapping and cultism.
He also highlighted ongoing initiatives under his administration’s SHINE Agenda, including improved healthcare delivery through the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS), rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, investments in education, youth empowerment programmes, and economic development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.
Expressing confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome its challenges, the governor said Nigeria possesses the resilience and determination needed to build a safer and more prosperous future.
“Nigeria has overcome difficult periods before, and we will overcome these challenges again. With strong institutions, responsible leadership, active citizen participation, and unwavering faith in our nation, we can build a safer, more prosperous, and more united country,” he said.
He further urged political leaders, public office holders, and citizens to uphold the principles of accountability, transparency, and the rule of law, while cautioning against divisive politics, misinformation, and actions capable of undermining democratic institutions.
As preparations gradually begin for future electoral contests, the governor called for peaceful political participation and issue-based campaigns, maintaining that democracy thrives when citizens engage responsibly and leaders remain accountable.
Okpebholo congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance, enhanced security, and sustainable development across Edo State.
