The High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Botswana, H.E John Shama Shaga, formally presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, at the State House in Gaborone on Thursday 16th July, 2026.
The solemn ceremony, which included a Guard of Honour, signifies the official commencement of the High Commissioner’s diplomatic responsibilities in Botswana.
During the occasion, the High Commissioner conveyed the sincere regards of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering the enduring friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two nations.
He emphasised the importance of advancing collaboration across several sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture, with a particular focus on the livestock industry, creative industry, fintech and technology, tourism, and the development of MSMEs, as essential for strengthening people-to-people ties. The High Commissioner also urged the early activation of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to enhance connectivity and commercial exchanges.
President Boko congratulated the High Commissioner on his appointment and also conveyed warm fraternal greetings to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people.
He underscored the significance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a vital instrument for Africa’s economic integration. He further expressed support for the proposed areas of cooperation and highlighted the promising opportunities in tourism and the legal sector.
The High Commissioner reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working hand in hand with the Government of Botswana to deepen bilateral relations and promote shared prosperity during his tenure.
