FIC Report (Imo State) – The Federal Government’s drive to strengthen digital education received a boost in Imo State as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with IHS Nigeria Limited, trained 200 teachers and principals from 100 public primary and secondary schools under the IHS Digital Literacy and School Connectivity Programme.
The training, held in Owerri, is aimed at equipping educators with digital skills needed to enhance classroom teaching and learning while expanding access to technology-driven education in public schools.
Representing the Imo State Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Bernard Thompson Ikegwuoha, the Executive Secretary of the Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB), Mrs. Theresa Okwu, commended UNICEF and IHS Nigeria for the initiative, describing it as a valuable intervention that complements ongoing efforts to deepen digital learning in schools.
She noted that the programme would strengthen teaching and learning by enhancing the digital capacity of teachers and urged participants to transfer the knowledge acquired to their students upon returning to their various schools.
Also speaking, the Director of Data, Digital Platforms and Analytics, Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Owunna Vivian, who represented the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Chidiebere Egboh, described the initiative as a significant opportunity to improve teachers’ digital competencies and promote technology-based education.
Executive Director of Focus Teens Foundation and implementing partner for the project, Mr. Olaonipekun Kazeem, said the School Connectivity Programme is designed to provide participating schools with internet connectivity and digital learning opportunities that will empower teachers and students to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
He explained that the programme involved 100 schools represented by 200 teachers and principals, adding that participants were equipped with practical digital skills to improve lesson preparation, integrate technology into classroom instruction and promote safe and responsible internet use among students.
According to him, the training will also prepare teachers to introduce learners to future-ready digital skills, manage available digital resources effectively and become champions of digital citizenship within their schools.
As part of the intervention, each participating school received a free internet router to improve access to online educational resources and enhance digital learning for both teachers and students.
The initiative underscores the growing collaboration between development partners and stakeholders in supporting the Federal Government’s commitment to improving digital literacy, expanding access to quality education and preparing Nigerian learners for the demands of the digital economy.
