The Nigeria weightlifting star, Mary Taiwo yesterday secured gold for Nigeria at the on-going African Games in Ghana by securing the nation’s place in the gold tally.
Mary Taiwo won gold medal by lifting 128kg in the clean and jerk, silver medal in Snatch and a silver medal overall.
Earlier on, Nigeria had three triple gold medalists in weightlifting: Edidiong Umoafia (men’s -67kg in the clean and jerk, snatch and overall), as well as Adijat Olarinoye (women’s -55kg) and Rafiatu Lawal (men’s -59kg).
The Nigeria officials has shown excitement on the performances of the Team Nigeria athletes in different competitions and noted that they have made the nation proud and believes the nation will scoop more medals.
The competition will continue for another two weeks after the official opening on 8 March. The African Games in Ghana will conclude on Saturday 23 March.
The President of the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation, Dr. Abudulahi applauded the wonderful performance of the Nigerian female weightlifter and was impressed with her outcome at the end of the competition.
