Abia NLC joins the rest to protest the harsh economic realities occasioned by Fuel increase

Thousands of protesters comprising workers in the organised sector and Civil Society Groups poured into the streets of Umuahia  to protest the harsh economic situation in the country.

The protest was in compliance with the directive of the national Leadership of the NLC, which called out all workers and the Nigerian masses for a nationwide demonstrations against the thoughtless policies and knee-jerk decisions of the present administration.

Led by the leadership of the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congre(TUC), including the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the protesters gathered at the Okpara Square as early as 7.30am.

By 8.00am Labour Leaders addressed the angry workers before they embarked on the march to government house to register their grievances with the federal government.

The State  Chairman of Abia NLC, Comrade Pascal Nweke told the aggrieved workers that the protest was provoked by the anti-people policies of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

“The NLC and the TUC are here to make sure that what we were directed to do was done effectively.

He lamented that tge present administration had hastily taken harsh decisions without putting in place appropriate safety measures to cushion the effects of the economic policies.

If the federal government say they want to remove oil subsidy, they should have started with the palliatives for us the workers also for the populace,” he said.

The Chairman of theTUC, Comrade Ihechi Enogwe, with his NLC counterpart, insisting that the organised labour would not budge in this cause to protect workers and Nigerian masses from insensitive and harsh economic policies of government.

At the Abia government house, the protesters were received by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, who stood in for his boss, received the workers.

At the Abia government house, the protesters were received by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, who stood in for his boss, received the workers.

The COS told the protesters that the Otti administration has been keeping its promise of paying workers their salaries not later than 28th day of every month.

He sympathised with workers over the hardships imposed on the Nigerian citizenry by the APC-led federal government, adding that Abia government was working on palliatives for its workforce.

The Labour Leaders had earlier told Ajagba that the workers’ protest was not directed at the Abia government, adding that things were already changing for better for Abia workers.
