FIC Report (Ebonyi State) – Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State (AE-FUNAI), has recorded another feat under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Daniel Nwachukwu, with the maiden participation of fifteen students in a two day training programme organised by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ).
The Fifteen students drawn from the Department of Mass Communication, of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), successfully participated in the two-day training programme.
The students were selected from the 300 and 400 levels, marking the first time the department is participating in such high level training programme.
The training featured engaging and interactive learning sessions and debate competitions facilitated by experienced media professionals, exposing participants to contemporary investigative journalism practices, ethical reporting, and career development opportunities.
Participants described the training as insightful and impactful, noting that it reinforced the importance of accuracy, credibility, ethical reporting, and fact-checking in journalism. They emphasized that the programme strengthened their understanding that verifying information before publication is essential to combating misinformation and sustaining public trust.
According to one of the participants, the President, Association of Mass Communication Students (AMACOMMS), AE-FUNAI, Master Eric Obi, “said that journalists and content creators should never be in a hurry to publish information without proper verification. It is always better to be accurate than to be the first to break a story. Verifying facts before sharing information helps prevent the spread of misinformation and builds public trust”, he described the programme as insightful and reinforced the importance of integrity, patience, and responsibility in journalism and communication.
The Head, Mass Communication Department, AE-FUNAI, Dr. Joseph Chukwu, described the training as a significant milestone in the department’s commitment to producing media professionals equipped with practical knowledge and industry-relevant skills.
He said the feat was possible because of his constant encouragement to staff and students to expand their horizons in their fields of endeavour. The Mass Comm HOD commended the participating students for representing the department and the university commendably and expressed appreciation to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) for providing a valuable platform for learning, mentorship, and professional development.
