FIC Report (Bayelsa State) – The Bayelsa State Government has launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat violent crimes across the state.

The launch, held at the Bayelsa State Police Command Headquarters in Yenagoa on May 20, 2026, also featured the inauguration of a Civilian Oversight Board aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and improved police-community relations.

Representing the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for establishing the VCRU across state commands.

Ayawei described the initiative as a strategic move toward strengthening internal security, tackling violent crimes, and ensuring accountability in policing. He assured the police command of the state government’s continued support in addressing security challenges.

Also present at the ceremony was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 16 Headquarters, AIG Abubakar Zubairu, who urged officers of the new unit to uphold professionalism and strictly adhere to Force Order 237 while carrying out their duties.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, said the VCRU aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to establish a specialized, intelligence-driven, and rapid response framework for tackling violent crimes and emerging security threats.

According to the police commissioner, the Civilian Oversight Board reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to transparency, respect for human rights, and community partnership in policing.

Members of the newly inaugurated board include representatives of traditional rulers, community leaders, the legal profession, civil society organizations, and the Police Community Relations Committee.

The police command advised residents to report violent crimes and share credible intelligence through dedicated VCRU lines: 08037045702, 07034578208, and 08143377442.

CP Iyamah reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while calling for sustained public cooperation through timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and detection.
