FIC Report (Imo State) – The Director General of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Imo State, Dr. Obioma Okafor, has cautioned residents against the purchase and consumption of unlabeled and unregistered products in the marketplace, citing serious health and safety risks.
The warning followed an inspection tour of major markets in Owerri, where concerns were raised over the increasing circulation of goods lacking proper identification and regulatory approval.
Dr. Okafor emphasized that products without clear labeling, manufacturing details, or evidence of regulatory compliance pose significant dangers, as their origin, composition, and quality cannot be verified. She advised consumers to exercise vigilance and prioritize their safety by avoiding such products.
She further explained that properly labeled products provide essential information, including ingredients, usage instructions, manufacturing and expiry dates, which enable consumers to make informed decisions. Other important indicators include the product name, manufacturer’s details, applicable regulatory registration such as NAFDAC numbers, and secure packaging.
The Director General also noted that the patronage of unregistered goods encourages illegal practices and undermines established standards within the marketplace. She urged traders to ensure that all products offered for sale comply with regulatory requirements, warning that non-compliance would attract appropriate sanctions.
Dr. Okafor reaffirmed the commitment of the Consumer Protection Council to safeguarding consumers and ensuring that only safe, approved, and properly certified products are available in Imo State.
This advisory comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of substandard and unregistered products in markets across Nigeria, particularly in urban centres such as Owerri.
Regulatory agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), continue to emphasize the importance of compliance to protect public health and safety.
