FIC Report (Kano State) – Residents of Kano State have commended the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, and the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, for suspending the planned Eid Durbar activities in the state to avert possible violence and breakdown of law and order.
The commendation followed the decision to halt the Hawan Daushe procession earlier scheduled to be held during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations by the two rival claimants to the Kano Emirate throne — His Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The development occurred in Kano metropolis on Thursday amid growing tension and fears among residents that the parallel Durbar processions could trigger unrest, endanger lives, and destroy property.
Many residents and security observers had expressed concern over the possibility of clashes if both processions were allowed to hold simultaneously in different parts of the city.
Speaking on the development, the Chairperson of the Women Lawyers Congress, Barrister Nafisa Abba Isma’eel, described the intervention of security agencies as timely and necessary.
She said the actions taken by the security chiefs demonstrated professionalism, patriotism, and commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Kano residents.
“The timely intervention by the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and the Kano State Commissioner of Police saved Kano from what could have resulted in a major tragedy. Their actions showed genuine concern for public safety and peace in the state,” she said.
Barrister Nafisa also urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and supportive of lawful measures introduced to maintain stability in Kano State.
Also reacting, legal practitioner and Chairman of Kano Concern Civil Society Organisation, Barrister Abubakar Musa Tudun Wada, praised both emirs for accepting the directives of security agencies despite extensive preparations already made for the Durbar procession.
According to him, the decision by both traditional rulers to suspend the activities reflected maturity, sacrifice, and respect for constituted authority.
“We sincerely appreciate His Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II for demonstrating restraint in the interest of peace and unity in Kano State,” he stated.
Barrister Tudun Wada further appealed to residents to avoid actions capable of causing unrest and continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to sustain peace across the state.
Observers say the peaceful suspension of the planned Durbar procession has further highlighted the importance of dialogue, responsible leadership, and cooperation in preserving unity and stability in Kano State.
