In a strategic move to elevate the quality of education and public service delivery in Nigeria, the leadership of SERVICOM and the management of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) have pledged to deepen their operational partnership. This commitment was highlighted during a high-profile courtesy visit by the SERVICOM leadership to the TRCN headquarters in Abuja on 30th July, 2026.

In her keynote address, the Acting National Coordinator and CEO of SERVICOM, Mrs. Helen Lawal, acknowledged the achievements of TRCN and commended the management for its proactive efforts in entrenching the Service Delivery Initiative (SDI) within the Council.

“Government is about the people. The quality of governance is directly measured by how effectively public services meet citizens’ needs and expectations. Public service is the only contact most citizens have with the government, and SERVICOM focuses on improving that contact,” Lawal asserted.

Lawal maintained that minimising the turnaround time for qualified teachers to receive their certificates after fulfilling all requirements was crucial to maintaining public trust.

Reviewing the Council’s performance scorecard, the SERVICOM Chief praised TRCN’s proven track record in resolving customer complaints and adhering to service standards. However, she also identified operational gaps, specifically a low implementation rate of the previous work plan and an ongoing service charter review that temporarily restricts stakeholders’ access to clear procedural guidance.

To bridge these gaps, Lawal advocated for the immediate formal inauguration and induction of the newly appointed Parastatal SERVICOM Unit (PSU) and Parastatal SERVICOM Committee (PSC), drawing members from all departments and state offices to act as management’s “eyes and ears” on the ground. She strongly called for a timely review and launch of an updated TRCN Service Charter. She proposed a clear 30-day timeline commitment for the issuance of teaching licenses and urged management to sponsor continuous staff training at the SERVICOM Institute.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Registrar and Chief Executive of TRCN, Dr. (Mrs.) Ronke Soyombo, emphasized the Council’s unwavering commitment as the premier regulatory body charged with professionalising, standardising, and enhancing the teaching workforce across the nation.

“TRCN’s overarching vision is to transform teaching into a prestigious profession of first choice, firmly rooted in the belief that a nation’s progress depends heavily on the capacity, conduct, and competence of its educators.” Dr. Soyombo stated.

The Registrar revealed that the Council has registered and issued certificates to over 1.6 million teachers across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). To ensure that only qualified individuals with the requisite pedagogical skills and ethical grounding are licensed, Dr. Soyombo noted that “the TRCN strictly utilises the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), conducts rigorous compliance checks, and provides 24/7 online register verification”.

Looking to the future, Dr. Soyombo announced a major upcoming digital transformation initiative. Subject to the approval of the Federal Ministry of Education, the TRCN will embark on the digitisation and contextualisation of schemes of work and lesson plans. “This innovation is specifically designed to equip teachers with easily accessible, technology-driven instructional resources aligned with national curriculum standards and responsive to local learning contexts”. She further stated.

Concluding the session, both agencies agreed that the work of nation-building began in the classroom. Backed by its Governing Council, management, and staff, the TRCN leadership invited parents, teachers, employers, and policymakers to leverage its digital platforms and partner with the Council in ensuring that every Nigerian child was taught by a professionally trained, passionate, and certified educator.
